Cassiel Gaube’s work is situated at the intersection of multiple kinaesthetic and choreographic practices. His artistic approach stems from a desire to experiment sensitively with the forms and methods specific to each of them and to bring in dialogue these various approaches to movement.

In his solo Farmer Train Swirl – Étude, he crystallises a series of formal and compositional experiments that take as their main point of departure his experience of the practice of house dance. Soirée d’études takes this exploration of the kinaesthetic possibilities of house dance a step further and consists of a series of short choreographic objects, each focusing on a specific region of this space of possibilities.

In his new solo MOTEUR, he explores the intersections of all the techniques that have informed his understanding of dancing: house dance, ballet, post-modern and contemporary dance. Each technical tradition is taken as a unique prism through which to apprehend the body’s dancing possibilities. The work seeks less to synthesise these approaches than to identify their underlying logics and discover what emerges at their confluence — where the saliences of one reveal the interstices of another and the contact of their differences opens kinaesthetic spaces yet to be imagined.

His work has been performed over a hundred times internationally, notably at Musée de l’Orangerie (Paris), KANAL — Centre Pompidou (Brussels), Concertgebouw Brugge, the Rockefeller Center (New York), the Watermill Center (Long Island, NY), Villa Medici (Rome), Dansens Hus (Stockholm) and Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon).

In the research project ftwrk, he developed and formalised a system of notation specifically designed to model and describe, in the form of numerical values, all weight shifts that the human body is capable of.

In parallel with his projects, he has a long-term collaboration with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. In 2019, she commissioned him to create choreographic phrases for the new stage version of West Side Story, which she then choreographed for the American producer Scott Rudin. In 2022, they co-created Dark Red – Neue Nationalgalerie, which they performed together in Berlin. The same year, he was commissioned by Le Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon to create a solo for one of the dancers of the company, premiered at the Centre national de la danse in Paris.

He was an associate artist at La Ménagerie de Verre, Paris (2019–2020) and artist-in-residence at the Centre national de la danse (2021). In 2025, he was the recipient of the inaugural Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Fellowship. He regularly teaches at La Ménagerie de Verre and at P.A.R.T.S., Brussels.

Cassiel is a graduate of P.A.R.T.S. – Performing Arts Research and Training Studios, Brussels, and studied at the Juste Debout School, Paris.

“[…] refreshingly subtle works by Christos Papadopoulos, Cassiel Gaube, Lisbeth Gruwez and many others convinced me that choreography has a future.”
